How to Choose Your First Racket

Walking into a pro shop for the first time can be overwhelming — dozens of rackets, all promising power and control. The good news: for a beginner, three things matter far more than brand or price.

Weight: a lighter racket (around 270–285g) is easier to swing and more forgiving while you build technique. You can always move heavier as your strokes mature.

Grip size: too big and you’ll grip too hard; too small and the racket twists on off-centre hits. When in doubt, size down and add an overgrip. Our coaches will measure you in seconds.

String tension: lower tension gives more power and comfort, higher tension gives more control. Start in the middle of the recommended range and adjust once you know your game.
