Footwork: The Skill That Wins Matches

Ask any coach what separates club players from competitors and most will say the same thing: footwork. The best strokes in the world fall apart if you’re out of position.

The split-step is where it starts — a small hop as your opponent strikes the ball, landing balanced and ready to push off in any direction. Drill it until it becomes automatic.

Recover after every shot. Great players don’t admire their winners; they’re already moving back toward the centre, ready for the reply. Small, quick adjustment steps beat big lunges.

Train movement on its own, not just during rallies. Ladder drills, cone sprints and shadow swings build the engine that lets your technique show up under pressure.
